50th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mauritius and Australia
Shop: Mauritius Post

Category: First Day Cover

This joint issue of a commemorative postage paid envelope by Australia Post and a stamp and First Day Cover by Mauritius Post on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee celebration of the diplomatic relations between Mauritius and Australia focuses on the historical and excellent relationship between the two countries.

Launched on 25 September 2020, this commemorative envelope series celebrates 50 years of official diplomatic relations between the nations of Mauritius and Australia. Our two countries enjoy close cultural and economic relations. We share common values including respect for democracy, human rights, rule of law, cultural diversity and sustainable development that we advocate in Indian Ocean regional and international fora. Our economic relationship is growing, based on opportunities in education and the blue economy and our people-to-people links are underpinned by Australia’s large Mauritian diaspora and alumni.

The envelope’s floral motifs represent our two countries’ rich and diverse flora. The colours of the Trochetia Boutoniana, endemic to Mauritius, reflect the vivacity of the Mauritian society; the green and gold of the Golden Wattle (Acacia Pycnantha) are Australia’s national colours. The resilience of the two species embodies the spirit of the peoples of our two countries.

Mauritius and Australia have also been linked throughout recent history. During the 17th and 18th centuries, many famous explorers visited Mauritius during their voyages of exploration to the southern continent. On the other hand, Nicolas Baudin and Mathew Flinders met at Encounter Bay in Southern Australia prior to their arrival in Mauritius in 1803.

Australia and Mauritius also share a rich philatelic history. The Postal Museum and Reference Centre at Mauritius Post have securely kept the first air mail bag carried during the inaugural flight of Qantas to Mauritius in 1952.
