Description
Agalega is an atoll located approximately 1080 km north of Mauritius, consisting of two islands: North Island and South Island. The two islands are separated by a shallow bank of 1.2 km and cover a total area of 2600 ha. In March 2015, the Republic of Mauritius and the Republic of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding, leading to the implementation of two major infrastructural development projects on the atoll. These projects, which were entirely financed by the Government of India, include the construction of a new airstrip and a new jetty. The new jetty features a berthing face of 255 m in length and provides essential services such as fresh water, electricity, and fire-fighting services. The purpose of these infrastructural developments is to enhance and modernize sea connectivity at Agalega, ultimately contributing to the overall development and accessibility of the island.
The issuance of a commemorative stamp to mark the completion of the new jetty highlights its importance and significance for the island. It serves as a symbol of progress and development in the region, showcasing Agalega’s commitment to enhancing its transportation infrastructure and fostering economic growth.
