1,250

The atoll of Agalega is located approximately 1080 km north of Mauritius and is made up of two islands, the North Island and the South Island. With a total area of 2600 ha, the atoll is home to a population of around 360 individuals. The main economic activity on the atoll is the production of coconut oil, with the area once being known as ‘La Perle des Iles à Huile’. In 2015, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Mauritius and India, leading to the implementation of two major infrastructural projects: the construction of a new airstrip and a new jetty, fully financed by the Government of India. The new 3 km long and 60 m wide airstrip, made of concrete, is designed to be all-weather and includes an air traffic control tower. These developments are aimed at improving and modernizing sea and air connectivity at Agalega, bringing important benefits to the local population and economy.
