OLYMPIC GAMES - SYDNEY 2000
The Mauritius Postal Services is issuing a set of four
postage stamps to mark the Games of the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney, Australia
from 15th September to 1st October 2000. The set consists of four
denominations: Re 1, Rs2, Rs5 and Rs15.
The issue of stamps relating to Olympic games can be
traced as far back as 1896. During the past century, Olympic Philately has
grown into a worldwide activity. In 1982, the International Olympic Philately
Federation was founded with a view to bringing together people who have an
interest in Olympics through philately. The issue of Olympics Stamps is
subject to conditions set out by the International Olympics Committee.
The four stamps depict four Olympic disciplines.
Re 1 - Handball
Handball is a sport which is growing in popularity among
young Mauritians. The ?Association Mauricienne de Handball?, launched in 1989,
is actively preparing young athletes in the discipline. Tournaments are
organized regularly at national and regional levels.
Rs2 - Archery
Archery was officially launched in 1992 in Mauritius and
the ?Federation Mauricienne de Tir ? l'Arc-FMTA? is recognised by various
bodies including FITA. The Federation has since 1997 participated in various
competitions at both regional and international levels and has won many medals.
In April this year, Mauritius has qualified for participation in the Sydney
Games.
Rs5 - Sailing
Sailing competitions are regularly organised in
Mauritius. The ?F?d?ration Nationale de la Voile? is responsible for promoting
the sport. Competitions are organised in different parts of the island and
each year a national competition is held for different categories. So far,
Mauritius has never qualified for participation at Olympic level in the
discipline.
Rs15 - Judo
The ?F?d?ration Mauricienne de Judo? was registered in 1974. The
sport is practised on a large scale by both men and women at all levels. Young
judokas have performed brilliantly at both regional and international levels.
